The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has officially launched the trial for the mass killings that occurred during the anti-discrimination student movement in July and August this year.
The proceedings began at 11:30 am on Thursday under the bench of ICT Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza.
The prosecution team sought arrest warrants against 50 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the opening day of the trial.
The tribunal ordered that Sheikh Hasina must appear before the court by November 18.
Earlier on Tuesday, ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam said that ICT will initiate trial procedures on October 17 in connection with the massacre and crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising.
Speaking to reporters at the tribunal premises, Tajul emphasised that the trial of individuals involved in crimes against humanity during the uprising would be prioritised.
