The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for holding any fresh election in the Gaibandha-5 constituency by three months.
The decision was announced in a press release issued by SM Asaduzzaman, Joint Secretary of the Election Commission on Wednesday.
As per the constitution, if a parliamentary seat falls vacant, the election for the seat must be held within 90 days. However, Election Commission can extend the time if the polls cannot be held within 90 days.
On October 12, the EC postponed Gaibandha-5 by-polls for massive irregularities in the voting centres.
Following the death of Gaibandha-5 lawmaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Fazle Rabbi Miah on July 22, 2022, it became a constitutional obligation to hold the election for the parliamentary seat by October 20.
