India will import around 3,000 tons of hilsha fish from Bangladesh marking the upcoming holy Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, going to be held next month, said said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.
“We have been exporting hilsha continuously for the last three years to India as a mark of gesture and relief for 15-20 days ahead of the holy Durga festival”, said Commerce Minister, reports BSS.
A total of 60 private companies got approval from the commerce ministry to export those consignments during the religious festival. Each company could export a maximum of 50 tons of hilshas.
The ministry, however, in its latest order has extended export timeframe till October 5 instead of earlier scheduled timeframe of September 30 as the government has imposed 22-days hilsha fishing ban starting from October 7.
As per the order, the export permits cannot be transferred to other companies or any kind of sub-contract is not allowed. Only the authorized organizations will be able to export the hilsha shipments.
