A 50-year-old man, who was detained on Monday, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of the toilet of Banshtoil Police camp in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail early Tuesday, reports UNB.
The deceased is Lebu Shikdar, son of Bahar Uddin of Banshtoil village under the upazila.
Gias Uddin, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Banshtoil Police camp, said police detained Lebu and Mafiz in connection with the killing of one Sakhina Begum of Banshtoil Westpara village on Monday.
“Lebu committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of the toilet of the police outpost,” said the police official.
Police handed over the body to the family members after postmortem and he was buried in the night.
Aleya Begum, wife of Lebu, claimed that a team of police led by Sakhawat and Nesar Uddin picked up Lebu and took him to the police camp forcibly on Monday night and they unleashed torture on Lebu during the whole night.
He died there after failing to bear the torture under police custody, Aleya alleged.
She also demanded justice and exemplary punishment for those involved in the killing.
Meanwhile, protesting the incident, locals blocked the Gorai-Sakhipur-Dhaka road after torching tyres on the road, disrupting vehicular movement for three hours on Tuesday.
A three-member probe body was formed to look into the matter, said Mohammad Kaisar, superintendent of Tangail Police.
A police constable identified as Subrata Sarkar has been withdrawn for dereliction of duty and attached to the district Police Lines, he added.
