At least 50 people including 15 police personnel were injured in a clash between BNP activists and police in Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur during a protest procession on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses said BNP men were staging a programme in Gangachara in the afternoon protesting the killing of Jubo Dal leader Shaon in Narayanganj and the recent price hike of essential commodities.
BNP leaders and activists started the protest rally from the Gangachara market. When the rally reached near Dakbungalow area, police stopped them which triggered a clash between them.
Police brought the situation under control by charging batons and firing tear gas, leaving at least 35 BNP men and 15 police members including an officer-in-charge injured.
The injured were admitted to Gangachara Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Rangpur Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hossain Raihan said the situation is under control and additional police force have been deployed on the spot.
Legal action will be taken in this regard after consulting with senior officials, he added.
