Nuts and seeds—such as almonds, cashews, chia, and flax seeds—are packed with essential nutrients and often included in diets aimed at weight loss or maintenance.
However, certified Indian fitness and nutrition coach Raj Ganpath warns that they may not always be beneficial for weight loss, reports Hindustan Times.
Nutritional value of nuts and seeds
Raj Ganpath explains that nuts and seeds are rich in both micronutrients and macronutrients, including fats, proteins, and carbs. However, they contain significantly more fat than protein or carbs, making them primarily a fat source.
Calorie density concerns
Due to their high-fat content, nuts and seeds are calorie-dense. Even small portions can significantly increase calorie intake, potentially disrupting weight loss efforts.
Finding the right balance
While nuts and seeds are healthful, it’s crucial to balance energy and nutrient intake. For weight gain, they are beneficial due to their high calorie and nutrient content. For weight maintenance, portion control is essential.
When to avoid nuts and seeds
If weight loss is the goal, consuming nuts and seeds may not be ideal as their calorie density can make creating a calorie deficit challenging. Instead, Raj recommends opting for alternatives like psyllium husk for fiber and other protein sources that are lower in calories.
