Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s cousin Shaikh Salauddin alias Juwel has become Bidhan Mallik in Indian Aadhaar card.
He altered his father’s name as well. His Bangladeshi NID card shows Sheikh Abu Naser as his father while the newly issued Indian Aadhaar card shows Mudindranath Mallick as Juwel’s father.
He is roaming across the India with his new identity.
Awami League leaders and activists are deeply concerned about the actions of the nephew of country’s first president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The people of the country also embarrassed with this action. They say: “It was in no way appropriate for such an influential member of the Sheikh family to do such a thing.”
According to related sources, like Shaikh Juwel, many of Sheikh family received Indian Aadhaar card recently. Bangladesh Pratidin has received a copy of Juwel’s Aadhaar card.
In 2018, Shaikh Salauddin was elected as the Member of Parliament from Khulna-2 parliamentary constituency for the first time, and was re-elected in 2024 on the nomination of Awami League. Although he is Shaikh Salauddin on papers, he is better known as Shaikh Jewel everywhere.
Immediately after the Hasina government was overthrown in the mass uprising on August 5, almost all of Shaikh Jewel and the Sheikh family took refuge in India.
Earlier, many of the Sheikh family were among the 626 people in the custody of the army. They sought refuge with the Bangladesh Army for their safety. Later, in their convenient time, they left the security custody of the cantonment and crossed the border to India.
Multiple sources say that like Sheikh Jewel, many members of the Sheikh family have taken Indian citizenship through a special process.
They have changed not only their names in the Aadhaar card, but also their father’s name. With that card, they have been moving freely in India.
Again, many who have taken refuge in India have also been given travel cards. Using that card, they are able to travel to different countries of the world. However, Shaikh Jewel spends most of his time in Kolkata.
