Experts reported that over 2.5 lakh children in the country are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), while close to 4.8 million other minors suffer from different kidney-related health issues on Sunday.
The experts made the revelation at a two-day international conference on peritoneal dialysis for child kidney patients held at Krishibid Institution in the country.
The conference ended Sunday amid the participation of over 200 doctors and nurses as well as medical trainers. Apart from Bangladesh, physicians also hailed from India, the US, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Singapore and New Zealand.
The event’s training session director Professor Dr Azmeri Sultana said the trainings provided during the two-day event would primarily equip doctors and nurses with the expertise to conduct peritoneal dialysis on children, in a bid to bring down child mortality rates.
Though there is not accurate data on kidney patients in the country, it can be fairly estimated that the tally is around 2 crore, 50 lakh of whom are children. Inborn complications, kidney failure following diarrhoea and nephritis issues cause kidney diseases among children.
Among these, diarrhoea is 29% more likely to cause kidney failure among children compared with adults.
“Dr MR Khan Shishu Hospital and Institute of Child Health” organised the event, which featured 10 training sessions.
On behalf of “Dr MR Khan Shishu Hospital and Institute of Child Health” present at the event were: Hospital Director Brigadier General (retd) Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, Secretary General Professor Dr Mohammod Shahidullah, Academic Council President Professor Dr Nazmun Nahar, and Academic Secretary Professor Dr Azmeri Sultana, among others.
Furthermore, the event’s Academic Director Professor Dr Khadija Rahman, and Co-chairman for training Dr Nobo Krishna Ghosh were present.
PDKIDS2024 Adviser Professor Dr Mohammed Hanif and Paediatric Nephrology Society of Bangladesh President Professor Dr Afroza Begum were also present.
At the event, Indian Professor RN Srivastava and Singaporean Professor Yap Hui Kim as well as local experts Professor Dr Mohammed Hanif, Professor Dr Nazmun Nahar and Professor Dr Mohammod Shahidullah were honoured with lifetime achievement crests.
