Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is expected to visit India this week to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, amid heightened tensions due to the West Asia conflict.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting will serve as a precursor to the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled in New Delhi this September, where leaders of major emerging economies are expected to meet amid rising geopolitical tensions and growing global uncertainty.
Since the US-Iran conflict erupted on February 18, Araghchi has spoken with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at least four times to discuss the escalating crisis in West Asia and broader geopolitical developments.
During the conversations, Araghchi briefed Jaishankar on the evolving situation following what Tehran described as US and Israeli attacks, warning about their impact on regional and global stability.
He also called for greater coordination among BRICS nations to help maintain international stability and reiterated Iran’s commitment to exercising what it termed its “legitimate right of self-defence.”
Araghchi last visited India in May 2025 for a two-day official trip to co-chair the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting, marking his first visit to the country since assuming office in August 2024.
The May 7–8 meeting was held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty and focused on reviewing key bilateral issues while exploring ways to deepen political, economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
