The Trump administration has released thousands of previously classified documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
The newly unveiled records, posted on the National Archives website, include about 80,000 pages, some of which were previously redacted. This follows a 2024 executive order by Trump mandating the release of files related to the assassinations of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.
While researchers are still examining the 1,123 newly posted documents, experts believe they are unlikely to contain groundbreaking revelations.
Tom Samoluk, a former deputy director of the Assassination Records Review Board, stated that most of the records had been reviewed and made public in the 1990s, and he does not expect any “smoking gun” to emerge. He noted that the board released most significant documents at the time, leaving little room for new discoveries.
Despite previous pledges from Trump and other presidents to fully release all assassination records, some files remain classified. These withheld documents belong to agencies like the CIA, Pentagon, and State Department, with officials citing the need to protect confidential sources and intelligence methods.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed that some records are still sealed for legal and security reasons, but the National Archives is working with the Justice Department to expedite their release.
Political scientist Larry Sabato, author of The Kennedy Half-Century, cautioned the public not to expect major revelations from the release, pointing out that most of the critical details about JFK’s assassination are already known.
Although new insights may emerge, they are unlikely to significantly alter the widely accepted conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.
The JFK assassination has long fueled conspiracy theories, with many hoping for new evidence to support alternative theories. However, experts believe the new records will likely offer more context rather than definitive answers.
