Syria has regained its membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after more than a decade, following an initiative led by Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, sources confirmed Friday.
Fidan attended an extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Saudi Arabia, where discussions focused on Syria’s reinstatement. Türkiye played a pivotal role in bringing the issue to the agenda, and a resolution it supported was adopted, officially restoring Syria’s status.
Following the decision, Syria’s new Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani attended the meeting, reclaiming the country’s seat and marking the formal end of its suspension, which had been in place since 2012.
Syria’s membership was revoked in response to escalating violence by the Assad regime during the civil war. The suspension was recommended at an OIC ministerial session in Jeddah on June 24, 2012, and later formalized at the 4th Extraordinary OIC Summit in Mecca on August 14-15, 2012.
The reinstatement signals a shift in regional diplomacy, reflecting increased engagement with Syria’s leadership and evolving political dynamics within the OIC.
