A fire at a resort construction site in the South Korean city of Busan killed at least six people on Friday, according to fire officials.
Around 100 workers evacuated, while another 14 were rescued by helicopter from the top of the structure, said Hong Moon-shik, chief of the Busan Gijang District Fire Department. Hundreds of firefighters were deployed, bringing the blaze under control by Friday afternoon after it was reported at around 10:20 a.m.
Six people were found unconscious on the first floor, near the suspected origin of the fire, and later pronounced dead at hospitals. At least 25 others sustained minor injuries. The cause remains unclear, Hong said.
Television footage showed thick smoke and flames rising from the site as a helicopter approached for rescue operations. Shortly after the fire broke out, acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered officials to deploy “all available personnel and equipment” to contain it.
