UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed grave concern over recent Israeli air strikes in Yemen and Houthi missile attacks targeting Israel. The strikes, which occurred on Thursday, hit the Red Sea ports of Hudaydah, Salif, and Ras Issa, as well as power stations in Sana’a. The air strikes resulted in at least nine fatalities and three injuries, with significant damage to the ports, which will severely disrupt operations and port capacity.
Meanwhile, the missile attacks by the Houthis on Israel caused substantial damage to a school in central Israel. Guterres condemned the escalating violence, warning that it jeopardizes civilian lives, regional stability, and the freedom of maritime navigation.
The Secretary-General called on all parties to comply with international humanitarian law, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. He also expressed concern over the risk of further escalation and urged restraint from all parties involved. Guterres stressed that these actions undermine the ongoing mediation efforts of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, who is working toward a negotiated political resolution to the conflict in Yemen.
Additionally, Guterres reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN personnel and others detained arbitrarily by the Houthis.
