U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani in Baghdad on Friday, with a significant focus on tackling the ongoing crisis in Syria. Secretary Blinken reaffirmed U.S. support for a Syrian-led political process aimed at establishing an inclusive and representative civilian government, according to a statement.
Blinken emphasized that any political transition in Syria must uphold commitments to protect human rights, including those of women and minority communities, and safeguard the country’s religious and holy sites. He highlighted the critical need to ensure the unhindered flow of humanitarian assistance to Syrians in need and to prevent Syria from being exploited as a base for terrorism or a threat to neighboring states.
The conversation also focused on efforts to counter ISIS and prevent its resurgence in the region, recognizing Syria’s central role in broader regional stability. Both leaders aligned on the importance of collaborative efforts to address the humanitarian and security challenges emanating from Syria.
The meeting reinforced the U.S. commitment to pursuing peace and stability in Syria through diplomacy and sustained international engagement.
