In a significant statement on Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken expressed optimism about the future of Syria, saying that after 14 years of conflict, "the Syrian people finally have reason for hope." Blinken criticized the Assad regime for its prolonged refusal to engage in a credible political process and its reliance on support from Russia and Iran, which he argued has led to its gradual collapse.
The United States, Blinken emphasized, is committed to supporting a peaceful transition to an accountable government through a Syrian-led and inclusive process. During this transitional period, he stated, it is vital to uphold the rights of the Syrian people, including preserving state institutions, restoring essential services, and safeguarding vulnerable communities.
Blinken also underscored the U.S.'s dedication to holding the Assad regime and its allies accountable for atrocities, including the use of chemical weapons and the unjust detention of civilians such as journalist Austin Tice. "We will closely monitor developments and engage with regional partners to ensure justice and accountability," he said.
Referring to recent statements by Syrian rebel leaders, Blinken cautioned that actions would speak louder than words. He reiterated the U.S. call for all parties to respect human rights, protect civilians, and adhere to international humanitarian law.
The remarks reflect renewed U.S. focus on Syria's future amid ongoing international efforts to resolve the protracted conflict.
