Jordan has emphasized the importance of maintaining Syria's stability and unity in light of the rapidly evolving situation in the country, according to a statement from the government on Sunday.
The comments come after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled Damascus, with militants seizing control of the capital and effectively ending his 24-year rule. Jordan expressed its ongoing efforts to strengthen regional security, as reported by Petra News Agency.
In response to the developments, Geir Pedersen, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, reaffirmed his commitment to assisting the Syrian people in their pursuit of a stable and inclusive future. Pedersen highlighted the widespread desire among Syrians for stable transitional arrangements and called for dialogue, unity, and respect for international humanitarian law and human rights in the rebuilding of the country.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced on Sunday that it had deployed forces in the UN-monitored buffer zone along the Syria-Israel border and at key defense positions, in light of the recent events in Syria.
In Bahrain, Anwar Gargash, the UAE diplomatic advisor to the president, expressed concerns over the potential exploitation of political vacuums by non-state actors following the collapse of Assad's regime. Speaking at the Manama Dialogue security forum, Gargash criticized the political failure and the destructive consequences of conflict and chaos in Syria. He also urged Syrians to cooperate in preventing further instability, stating, "We hope that the Syrians will work together, that we don’t just see another episode of impending chaos."
