Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza have been reactivated, according to a Hamas official, following a weeks-long stall in discussions mediated by international parties. Basem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, told the Associated Press in Turkiye that talks aimed at ending the 14-month conflict, releasing captives from Gaza, and freeing Palestinian prisoners in Israel have resumed in recent days.
Despite the renewed engagement, Naim revealed that no "solid, well-formed" ceasefire proposal has yet been presented to Hamas. However, he expressed optimism, stating, “It’s not a big challenge to reach a deal […] if there are intentions on the other side.”
An unnamed official familiar with the negotiations also confirmed the involvement of Qatari mediators. The source, speaking anonymously due to restrictions on discussing the talks publicly, highlighted the key role of Qatar in facilitating the ongoing dialogue.
Ceasefire negotiations have repeatedly broken down during the conflict, but the latest developments signal a potential breakthrough as both sides weigh their positions amid the continued humanitarian and political crisis.
