Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman has termed claims that money is being printed to finance the government as baseless.
He made the remarks at a pre-budget discussion for the 2026-27 fiscal year with publishers and journalists at the Finance Ministry in the Secretariat on Saturday.
Recently, a seminar by the Policy Research Institute (PRI) claimed that the central bank was printing money to lend to the government, which could further fuel inflation.
Asked about the issue during the meeting, the governor said the claim was baseless. He said such information is negatively affecting the country’s image.
“The claim that Tk 20,000 crore was printed and given to the government is not true in any way. It has no basis in reality,” he said.
The governor also said recovering laundered money is difficult, but the government is trying to ensure that those funds cannot be used.
At the meeting, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the country’s economy needs to be freed from politics and moved towards democratisation.
He also said the banking sector and capital market have been drained due to practices followed over the years.
