Both of the country’s bourses — the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) — closed lower on Sunday as weakening investor sentiment pushed most stocks into negative territory.
The DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, edged down by 4.9 points to settle at 4,826, compared with 4,831 in the previous trading session. The market extended its lingering bearish momentum from last week, with indices remaining under pressure for most of the day.
Market turnover also declined, falling 3.3 per cent to Tk 2.9 billion from Tk 3.0 billion in the previous session.
On the sectoral front, food issues dominated turnover with a 15.4 per cent share, followed by textiles at 14.7 per cent and engineering at 11.8 per cent. Sector-wise performance was mixed, with jute (up 1.9 per cent), services (1.1 per cent) and tannery (0.8 per cent) posting the strongest gains. In contrast, cement (down 1.2 per cent), travel (0.9 per cent) and mutual funds (0.5 per cent) recorded the sharpest corrections.
Of the 397 issues traded on the DSE, 160 advanced, 156 declined and 81 remained unchanged.
The port city bourse also ended in the red. At the Chittagong Stock Exchange, the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) fell by 38.6 points, while the All Share Price Index (CASPI) declined by 63.2 points.
