After allowing imports, onion prices have fallen by Tk 20 to 30 per kg. This is bringing some relief to the market.
However, the supply of old local varieties of onions has decreased slightly in the capital's Karwan Bazar. It is being sold at Tk 120 per kg in the wholesale market, while the retail price is Tk 130. Two days ago, onions were sold at Tk150.
Meanwhile, the cut variety is being sold at Tk 90 in shops. Shopkeepers say that if imports continue and the supply of cut varieties increases, the price will come down further. A month ago, the onion market suddenly became unstable. After the government decided to allow imports, the price started to fall slightly. Import activities have already started through the Hili land port. Already, 30 tons of onions have entered the country.
