The interim government on Sunday dissolved the BGMEA board of directors and appointed Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice Chairman Md Anwar Hossain as the administrator.
Anwar’s duty is to hold organisational elections within 120 days and hand over power to the newly elected board, the commerce ministry said in a circular.
Awami League leader SM Mannan Kochi stepped down from the post of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on August 24 and disappeared from public view – as the ouster of Awami League government about twenty days earlier had prompted many other party members to go into hiding.
With Kochi’s resignation, Senior Vice-President Khandoker Rafiqul Islam assumed the responsibility to run the apex apparel trade body, and a new board was formed.
However, the new board members have been failing to properly address concerns raised by general members and failed to tackle a number of issues plaguing the apparel industry including labour unrest, the commerce ministry said in its circular, justifying its decision to appoint an administrator.
