Two people were killed, and 10 others were injured during a violent clash between two rival groups in the village of Najarpur in Narsingdi's Raipura upazila on Saturday. The victims were identified as Manik Mia, 55, an incumbent member of the Chanderkandi Union Parishad, and Kalpana Begum, 32, a former member of the same union.
According to Raipura police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jabbar, the clash was the result of long-standing tensions between Abid Hasan Rubel, a local Jubo League leader, and Harun-or-Rashid, vice-president of the Raipura municipality Awami League unit, who had been vying for dominance in the area.
Manik Mia, who was Rubel's uncle, had recently sought refuge at the home of Bashir Uddin, a member of No. 9 ward of the union parishad. Harun's supporters stormed the house, dragging Manik Mia into the courtyard where they fatally stabbed him. They also attacked and killed Kalpana Begum, a former union member, at the same location.
Police quickly arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
