The crane used to lift the girder was defective and had no fitness certificate which triggered the tragic accident in the city’s Uttara that left five people dead and injured two others.
Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the Legal and Media Wing of RAB revealed the information at a press conference in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Thursday.
He said the crane used in the Uttara girder fall accident had a maximum lifting capacity of 50 tonnes. But the girder that was being moved weighed 60 to 70 tonnes.
The fitness certificate of the crane was also expired, Moin added.
Five people including two children were crushed to death after a girder, part of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, fell on a car in the capital’s Uttara on Monday last.
