Meta on Monday rolled out a new feature on its Threads app that allows users to publish temporary posts — dubbed “ghost posts” — which automatically disappear 24 hours after being uploaded, reports Reuters.
The feature mirrors Meta’s popular “Stories” format on Instagram and Facebook, aiming to boost engagement by giving users more flexible and spontaneous ways to share content.
According to Meta, the update lets people “share unfiltered thoughts and fresh takes without the pressure of permanence or polish.” Replies to ghost posts will be sent privately to users’ inboxes, while likes and responses will not be publicly visible.
Users can create ghost posts by toggling the ghost icon in the post creation menu. These posts will appear as grayed-out, dotted chat bubbles in users’ feeds, distinguishing them from regular posts.
Threads, launched in 2023 as Meta’s answer to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), has continued expanding its feature set to attract and retain users. As of August 2025, the platform had 400 million active users.
