New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by 149 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in India on Wednesday.
Chasing the Kiwis’s 288 runs, Afghanistan scored 139 runs in 34.4 overs by losing all wickets.
Top order batter Rahmat Shah scored the highest 36 runs off 62 balls and middle order batter Azmatullah Omarzai scored 27 runs from 32 balls.
New Zealand bowlers -- Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson bagged 3 wickets each.
Earlier in the first innings, New Zealand posted 288 runs in 50 overs by losing 6 wickets.
Lower-order batter Glenn Phillips scored 71 runs off 80 balls while wicket-keeper batter Tom Latham scored 68 runs off 74 balls and opener Will Young scored 54 runs from 64 balls.
Afghan bowlers -- Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai bagged two wickets each while wrist spinner Rashid Khan got one wicket.
Glenn Phillips has become the player of the match.
Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bowl first.
