Afghanistan, going beyond everyone’s expectations, defeated the current champion and powerful England by 69 runs in the match of World Cup Cricket 2023 held on Sunday in Delhi.
Winning the toss, England opted to field first and Afghanistan got a flying start thanks to blistering knock of opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz. He hammered 80 off just 57 balls, while Ikram Ali scored 58 off 66 balls.
With the contribution of late middle order, Afghans pilied up 284.
Adil Rashid took 3 wickets for 46 for England.
In reply, England struggled from the very beginning. Harry Brook tried to fight back with his 66 off 61 balls, but that was not enough.
Ace Leg-spinner Rashid Khan and off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman took 3 wickets for the Afghans by giving away 37 and 51 runs respectively.
