Political leaders often stay ahead of the public mood. They understand voter sentiment, election strategy and the mechanics of governance. They also know how power can distance rulers from citizens. As the new government begins its tenure, many observers say it has made a positive start but must now act decisively to meet public expectations.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has moved forward with his election pledges. He has launched pilot projects for family cards and farmer cards. He has initiated reforms in civil and military administration and taken steps to strengthen foreign relations. He has also invoked the political legacy of his father, former president Ziaur Rahman, and his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

Supporters say his decision to follow traffic rules and travel without excessive protocol has resonated with the public during the government’s first week in office. However, analysts argue that the government must now prioritise urgent, short-, medium- and long-term plans to implement its broader agenda.

Many citizens say they have regained confidence in democratic participation after voting without fear. Young and female voters, in particular, have expressed satisfaction. Observers warn that the government must preserve that optimism by maintaining strict discipline within the ruling party.

They urge the prime minister to act firmly against extortion, land grabbing, tender manipulation and other misconduct, regardless of who commits the offence. They argue that expulsion from the party alone will not suffice and that visible legal action would strengthen public trust in the rule of law.

Political analysts also caution that opportunists often seek proximity to power. They warn that individuals may misuse political connections at home or abroad to gain influence. They say the prime minister must ensure that no one exploits his name or reputation for personal gain.

Economists describe the past 18 months under the interim administration as a period of stagnation. They say uncertainty hurt investment and slowed economic momentum. While expatriate remittances sustained foreign currency reserves, domestic investment weakened and many large business groups faced legal and financial pressure.

Analysts now call on the government to revive economic activity quickly. They recommend that the prime minister hold consultations with local industrialists and investors to address regulatory bottlenecks and restore confidence. They argue that stronger domestic investment would generate jobs, reduce unemployment and stabilise social conditions.

Experts also urge reforms in the banking and capital markets. They call for credible leadership in financial institutions to prevent corruption and capital flight. They warn that manipulation in the stock market has previously wiped out small investors and eroded confidence in a sector that many retirees and young entrepreneurs rely on.

Observers note that leadership ultimately determines whether power shapes a leader or a leader shapes power. They say the public expects Tarique Rahman to demonstrate decisiveness, foresight and integrity in the coming months.

They argue that the government should normalise law and order, engage business leaders, curb disinformation networks and take tough decisions within its first six months. Many believe that firm action against corruption and abuse of power would strengthen public support and enable the government to implement its plans more effectively.
