An altruistic sports lover
Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Chairman of Bashundhara Group.

In independent Bangladesh, one individual has distinguished himself in the broader social sphere and sporting life through humanitarian concern and a love for sport, inspiring others and serving as a role model, while creating a unique resonance within society and national life—he is Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Chairman of Bashundhara Group, one of the country’s leading industrial conglomerates.

A quintessential Bengali and a patriotic moderniser, he has long upheld a philosophy: Bangladesh must come first in all spheres. He believes that national dignity on the global stage depends on progress across every sector. Under his capable leadership, the Bashundhara Group has consistently worked for the welfare of the country and its people.

A visionary, confident and positive-minded individual, he maintains that Bangladesh’s march forward—achieved through immense sacrifice—cannot be halted. The nation will continue to advance and prosper. He sees today’s youth, driven by patriotism, integrity and ambition, as the country’s greatest hope.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s life story is marked by realism, sincerity, patience and resilience. Despite leading from the front, he remains personally modest, promoting professional management and empowering colleagues. He has never made promises beyond his means, a principle that has strengthened both him and his institution in the face of challenges. In corporate culture and social responsibility, he has set a notable example, while his contribution to sport remains enduring.

Despite a demanding life, he has retained a deep love for sport. He has invested vast sums to enhance Bangladesh’s sporting standards—an unparalleled commitment that has earned him recognition as a pioneer.

Born in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria, he comes from a sporting family. His father, Alhaj Abdus Sobhan, was a senior lawyer at the Dhaka High Court and also known as an All-India swimming champion. His mother, Umme Kulsum, was a homemaker. He has two brothers and four sisters, and his elder brother, Abdus Sadeq, was a legendary hockey and football player. His passion for sports is “genetic” or hereditary.

During his student years, he played hockey regularly. He attended Armanitola High School, regarded as the cradle of hockey in the country. He played in hockey leagues for clubs such as Azad Sporting and Bachelor Sporting, among others. At the youth level, he represented the then East Pakistan team in hockey and, after the country’s independence, played national hockey for his home district.

His enthusiasm extends beyond hockey to other sports as well. He has always followed international developments in football, cricket, hockey and other games. Even today, he does not hesitate to stay up late to watch matches. When it comes to national sporting events, he is completely absorbed, his eyes fixed on the field, particularly when it comes to football. His interest and curiosity while watching a game are said to be remarkable.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan earned his undergraduate degree from the Department of Business Studies at the University of Dhaka. His innovative thinking is exceptional, and he has a remarkable ability to read and understand people accurately.

It is impossible to summarise his activities as the Group Chairman in brief. He is present in every sphere, acting as a guiding figure for all, and his thoughts and ideas constantly inspire and provoke reflection.

On 10 January 2025, on the eve of the 15th anniversary of Kaler Kantho, during a ceremony honouring the best employees of the newspaper and providing financial support to the families of five journalists martyred during the July uprising, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan addressed the journalists as the chief guest: “No matter how uncomfortable the truth is, speak it. It will benefit the entire nation. What a remarkable and compelling piece of advice.”

As Chairman of Bashundhara Kings, he has sown the seeds of true professionalism in Bangladesh. The outcome of this vision is the vast Bashundhara Sports Complex. What does the Bashundhara Sports City not have? It features the international-standard Bashundhara Kings Arena, where international football matches are regularly held, expansive football practice fields, facilities for football and futsal, indoor and outdoor cricket, badminton (24 courts), padel, hockey, shooting, squash, basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, skating, kabaddi, yoga, a Gold’s Gym, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and a spa including South Steam Room, Ice Room, Himalayan Salt Room, Cold Plunge, On-Sale Hot Pool, and Experience Shower. It also houses the Zulqan Indoor Arena with facilities for Muay Thai, boxing, MMA, kickboxing, taekwondo, powerlifting, arm wrestling, rock climbing, and rope climbing.

From the outset, the vision behind creating such a vast sports complex has been to develop sport as a profession and livelihood by expanding infrastructure and training systems, while encouraging the sports economy. He has always emphasised one principle in particular—“We need more playing fields.”

One of his dreams was to establish Bashundhara Public School and College within a spacious sports environment. This dream was realised in January of last year, offering students a learning environment where boys and girls can pursue their studies alongside multiple sporting opportunities—a model unique in the country.

To implement social responsibility, he founded Bashundhara Shuvosangho, an extraordinary initiative by the Group Chairman. This initiative supports the self-employment, self-reliance and empowerment of underprivileged men and women throughout the year. Hundreds of students have benefited from Bashundhara scholarships, enabling them not only to continue their education but also to establish themselves successfully in various professional fields. In addition, Bashundhara Shuvosangho carries out numerous ongoing social programmes.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan is a humanitarian, a sports enthusiast, and a visionary leader who genuinely cares for people, works for their welfare, and stands by them in times of need.
