BNP candidates secured a sweeping victory in Chattogram in the 13th National Parliament election, winning 14 out of 16 constituencies in the district. Of the winners, five reclaimed their former seats, while 11 are set to enter the Jatiya Sangsad for the first time.
Party leaders attribute the success to strong internal unity and widespread public support. BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Golam Akbar Khandker described the outcome as a reflection of party cohesion and renewed public confidence.
“Through this victory, BNP has once again proven that it is a party of the people. Unity within the party and the trust of general voters made this possible,” he said.
Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, who won the Chattogram-5 seat by a margin of around one lakh votes and serves as BNP’s Joint Organising Secretary, said the large margin of victory has increased his responsibility toward constituents.
“My priority now is to honour the trust and confidence placed in me,” he said.
However, analysts say that at least 8 factors are working behind the landslide victory of BNP in the election. These include - resolving internal conflicts and working unitedly for the party-nominated candidate, making full use of the old vote bank, winning the hearts of young voters, the trust of women voters, gaining the trust of minorities, the pull of ‘Chatgaiya’ regionalism, taking Pir-Mashaykh and Qaumi ideological voters to their side and being able to attract the general voters are among them.
Five former MPs have regained their lost constituencies in the election. Four of them are from BNP. They are Chattogram-3 Mustafa Kamal Pasha, Chattogram-6 Gias Quader Chowdhury, Chattogram-11 Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Chattogram-13 Sarwar Zaman Nizam.
Jamaat candidate from Chattogram-15 constituency Shahjahan Chowdhury has also regained his old kingdom. There are 11 new faces in Chattogram. Two of them have regained their father's constituencies. They are Chattogram -7 Hummam Quader Chowdhury and Chattogram -10 Sayeed Al Noman, the sons of two late BNP leaders.
Those who are going to set foot in parliament for the first time as MPs are – Chattogram-1 Nurul Amin, Chattogram -2 Sarwar Alamgir, Chattogram-4 Aslam Chowdhury, Chattogram -5 Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, Chattogram -8 Ershad Ullah, Chattogram -9 Abu Sufian, Chattogram -12 Enamul Haque, Chattogram -14 Jasim Uddin, Chattogram -16 Zahirul Islam.
However, the Election Commission has suspended the results of BNP's winning candidate from Chattogram-4 constituency as the case filed in the Appellate Division has not been finally settled.
Among the winning candidates, BNP candidate from Chattogram-5 constituency Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin won by a margin of one lakh votes.
Apart from this, BNP candidate Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury from Chattogram-11 constituency, BNP candidate Gias Quader Chowdhury from Chattogram-6 constituency, Abu Sufian from Chattogram -9 constituency and BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir from Chattogram-2 constituency won by a large margin.
