A sports-minded visionary
Ahmed Akbar Sobhan

Bangladesh’s one of the largest business groups and most influential corporate entity Bashundhara Group has proven itself to be a transformative force in the country’s sports landscape. This shift is largely attributed to the vision and dedication of its chairman, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, whose deep-rooted passion for sports has guided the group’s substantial investments in the field. His efforts have not only revolutionized the local sports scene but have also garnered international recognition, establishing Bangladesh as a rising star in global sports.

Under Sobhan’s leadership, Bashundhara Group has built world-class sports facilities, including the Bashundhara Sports City, which boasts international-standard infrastructure. Notably, the Bashundhara Kings Arena, South Asia’s only private football stadium of its kind, has become a symbol of excellence in the region. The stadium has earned praise not only from South Asian countries but also from prestigious football clubs in Europe, proving that local investments can leave a global impact.

Bashundhara Kings, the football club founded by the group, has been at the heart of this sports revolution. With five consecutive league titles under its belt, the club has set a new standard for excellence in Bangladesh football. In just seven years, the club has secured 11 titles, a feat unmatched by any other team in the country. This success is the result of a strong professional culture, emphasizing discipline, transparency, and governance — values that Bashundhara Kings has instilled both on and off the field.

The remarkable success of Bashundhara Kings can also be attributed to the group’s commitment to fostering new talent. The club's focus on player development and consistency has become a benchmark for others, creating a sustainable model for future generations of footballers. Its rise from a local team to an internationally recognized club reflects the potential of a well-managed, well-supported sports organization.

At the core of this transformation is Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, a man whose love for sports began at an early age. Born in 1952 in Islampur, Dhaka, Sobhan’s sporting roots run deep within his family. His father, Alhaj Abdus Sobhan, was not only a senior lawyer but also an All India swimming champion. Sobhan’s brother, Abdus Sadeq, was a distinguished football and hockey player who played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s post-independence football scene. Sobhan himself was a skilled hockey player and has maintained a lifelong enthusiasm for all forms of sport, from football to hockey and beyond.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s vision for sports transcends his personal passion. He believes that sports play a vital role in shaping a healthy, vibrant society, one where youth are empowered and engaged. His efforts to elevate Bangladesh’s profile in the global sports arena stem from his belief that the country's potential can be unlocked through the development of its sporting infrastructure and the nurturing of its talent.

The success of Bashundhara Group in sports is also driven by its commitment to social responsibility. Beyond its corporate ventures, the group has invested heavily in education, healthcare, social service, and environmental sustainability. This holistic approach to development reflects Sobhan’s broader vision for a better Bangladesh — one where sports serve as a vehicle for social change, unity, and national pride.

To further cement his legacy, Mr. Sobhan launched T Sports, the first dedicated sports channel in Bangladesh, with the goal of bringing sports to a wider audience. The channel has quickly gained popularity, helping to reignite interest in sports among the country’s youth. This initiative marks another milestone in Sobhan’s mission to create a sustainable and inclusive sports culture in Bangladesh.

Bashundhara Kings has already hosted a number of prestigious international matches, including FIFA World Cup qualifiers and AFC club tournaments. These events have placed Bangladesh firmly on the global sports map, making Sobhan’s dream of showcasing the country’s sporting potential a reality. His vision for the future includes the creation of a sprawling 300 bigha sports city, one of the largest of its kind in South Asia, which will cater to a wide variety of sports. This ambitious project is a testament to Sobhan’s commitment to ensuring that every sport has a place in the country's future.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s dedication to the development of Bangladesh's sports industry is unparalleled. He has transformed Bashundhara Group into a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes, coaches, and sports enthusiasts across the country. His focus on excellence, his unwavering belief in sports as a force for good, and his ability to turn dreams into reality have made him one of Bangladesh's most influential sports figures.

As Bashundhara Kings continues to dominate the football field and Bashundhara Group expands its impact on the sports landscape, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s legacy grows stronger. His leadership serves as a beacon for others in the corporate world to invest in sports, to build sustainable sports infrastructures, and to support the development of young talent.

On February 15th, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s birthday, sports enthusiasts across Bangladesh celebrate not only a visionary businessman but a true champion of sports. His contributions to the country’s sports industry have made an indelible mark, and his commitment to building a better future for sports in Bangladesh continues to inspire generations to come. Our humble respect and love to him on his birthday from sports lovers and sports fans.
