The Fakirhat Upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho has launched an initiative to ensure environmental conservation and provide safe nesting sites for birds in Bagerhat. Members of the organisation installed eco-friendly clay pots on tree branches in a secluded area near the Turag River in Shantiganj on 12 February.
Animesh Kumar Majumder, president of the Fakirhat Upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, formally inaugurated the activity. During the event, he noted that urbanisation and indiscriminate tree felling have rapidly shrunk natural habitats for birds. He explained that large trees near the Fakirhat market once served as popular sanctuaries, but recent clearing has left many birds homeless.
Majumder further highlighted that small-scale bird hunters pose a significant threat to wildlife. These hunters often steal chicks from nests, severely disrupting the breeding cycle. He emphasised that creating artificial habitats in quiet, safe locations is now essential for survival.
As part of this project, volunteers placed clay pots on high branches to serve as secure homes. Majumder expressed hope that the initiative would play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature and the environment.
Pallab Acharya, Vice-President of the unit, stated that Bashundhara Shuvosangho operates under the slogan "Alongside everyone in good deeds." He noted that the organisation conducts various activities to protect both people and the environment, with the Shantiganj project being a notable example.
New member Antar Das praised the initiative, mentioning that recent storms have destroyed many trees and nests. He remarked that he felt proud to join an organisation dedicated to such humanitarian and environmental causes.
Local resident Shukur Ali expressed his admiration for the project, noting the importance of creating safe refuges for birds in the modern era of urbanisation. Another local youth, Mohiuddin, thanked the organisation and reminded others that protecting birds is a collective responsibility for maintaining ecological balance.
