Disney has revived its live-action adaptation of Tangled following an indefinite pause earlier this year. Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being considered for the role of Mother Gothel, although casting has not yet been finalised.
The project was initially halted in April after the underwhelming box-office performance of the studio's 'Snow White' remake.
The success of 'Lilo & Stitch', which grossed $1 billion globally and drove over $2.6 billion in retail sales in 2024, is said to have renewed confidence in adapting classic animated films with cultural resonance for younger audiences.
Based on the 2010 animated hit and the Brothers Grimm tale, Tangled follows Rapunzel, a long-haired princess, who is rescued from her secluded tower by the outlaw Flynn Rider.
In the story, Mother Gothel is the primary antagonist. She kidnaps the young princess Rapunzel to exploit the youth-restoring magic in her long, golden hair. Gothel then raises the girl in a secluded tower, isolating her from the world.
The film will follow Rapunzel’s adventure with the charming thief Flynn Rider. Their journey of self-discovery remains the emotional core of the plot. Casting for the roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider is still underway.
The original film, featuring Mandy Moore's voice and the Oscar-nominated song 'When Will My Life Begin', earned $592 million worldwide. Michael Gracey is in talks to direct the remake, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson attached to the script. Further casting announcements are expected shortly.
