The investigation into the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg marked another twist last night after the police arrested his cousin, Assam Police Service (APS) officer DSP Sandipan Garg. He was present with the singer at the yacht in Singapore, where he died, reports India Today.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan was taken into custody following a series of interrogations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He had earlier been questioned alongside several of the late singer’s close associates.
He has been sent to a seven-day police remand after being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court today. The SIT team had sought a 14-day remand, but the court granted only seven days.
The 52-year-old singer was known for his Bollywood and Assamese songs, died in Singapore on September 19 while swimming near an island. He had gone on a yacht outing while he was visiting the country to perform at the North East India Festival.
Before Sandipan Garg, the police arrested four other including - the singer's bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, manager Siddharth Sharma, event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and musician Amritprava Mahanta.
Shekhar Jyoti Goswami had alleged that the singer's manager and the organiser of the event where he was supposed to perform in Singapore poisoned him. He also alleged that the accused specifically chose a foreign destination to cover up the act.
The 'Ya Ali' fame singer's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has also raised suspicions about his death. Challenging the Singapore police autopsy report which ruled out foul play, Garima pointed to serious lapses.
In another investigation report, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the case has uncovered a financial transaction of Rs 10 million (approx.13,717,000 BDT) in the bank accounts of the singer's two personal security officers (PSOs), Times of India reported.
"The financial transaction is examined thoroughly," the Indian publication quoted a source as saying.
