Leesa Gazi’s film “Barir Naam Shahana” has been chosen to represent Bangladesh in the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
The announcement was made at a press conference organised by the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS) in Dhaka on Saturday. The selection was finalised by the Oscar Bangladesh Committee, formed under the supervision of BFFS.
Earlier this month, the committee invited submissions for the category, with the deadline set for 16 September. Five films—“Saba”, “Barir Naam Shahana”, “Nakshikanthar Zamin”, “Priyo Maloti” and “Moyna”—were entered. Following screenings on 24 and 25 September, “Barir Naam Shahana”, released on 19 September, was confirmed as the official entry.
The film, based on a true story, features performances by Anan Siddique, Lutfar Rahman George, Iresh Zaker, Kazi Ruma, and Kamrunnahar Munni, among others.
The Oscar Bangladesh Committee was chaired by Mohammad Zahirul Islam, with members reviewing the submissions in accordance with the Academy’s rules. Representatives from the film industry, journalists, and committee members were present at the announcement.
