The Bangladeshi film “Sand City” (Balur Nagorite), directed by Mahde Hasan, has been officially selected for the prestigious Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Starring Mostafa Monwar and Victoria Chakma in the lead roles, the film continues to gain international recognition.
“Sand City” has been chosen for the “A Window on Asian Cinema” section, which showcases the diverse styles and visions of Asian cinema. This segment features masterful works from acclaimed auteurs and promising new talents, capturing the vibrant spirit of contemporary Asian filmmaking.
Previously, “Sand City” had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Europe. The film also achieved remarkable success by winning the Grand Prix award in the Proxima competition at the Film Fest.
The film tells the story of two central characters: Emma (Victoria Chakma), a woman from an ethnic minority background, who, upon leaving her office, finds slurs written on her bike—a daily occurrence that deeply affects her. Despite her efforts, she often feels disconnected and marginalised at work, perceived as an outsider.
The second character is Hasan (Mostafa Monwar), who works tirelessly at a glass plant while harboring dreams of starting his own venture. He collects materials, including silica sand, which he stores at home. Interestingly, Emma also collects sand for her cat litter, creating an unexpected connection between the two strangers.
