Sabina Yasmin, a prominent name in the country’s music industry, has been enchanting listeners with her soulful voice for more than fifty years. To honor her remarkable journey, media personality Shykh Seraj has produced a nearly three-hour-long documentary titled "Jui Phul: Sabina Yasmin," which explores the life, career, and musical journey of the celebrated artiste.
The details of the project were shared at a programme held at the Channel i office in the capital on Tuesday evening, where both Shykh Seraj and Sabina Yasmin were present.
“I had the opportunity to watch some parts of the documentary today,” Sabina Yasmin said. “I liked it immensely. I never imagined that Shykh Seraj bhai would make it so beautifully. There is nothing to be bored with in the documentary. I hope the audience will find a new Sabina Yasmin in Jui Phul.”
The documentary traces Sabina Yasmin’s journey from childhood through adolescence and into her mature career, exploring her personal life, political context during her university years, and her rise to prominence in the country’s music industry. It also captures memories surrounding her songs, experiences from film sets and collaborations with prominent actors, composers and producers who worked with her music.
Younger-generation singers including Somnur Monir Konal, Sania Sultana Liza, Imran Mahmudul, Janita Sultana Jhelik, Rakiba, Oyshee and Atiya Anisha perform 12 songs selected from Sabina Yasmin’s vast repertoire of more than 15,500. Sabina Yasmin herself provides commentary on each song, sharing the stories, struggles and emotions attached to them with the new generation of artistes.
“There were many challenges in making the documentary,” said Shykh Seraj. “Sabina Yasmin has sung more than 15,000 songs in her musical career, so it was difficult to select only 12. The artistes of this generation performed these songs in front of her, and we were able to look closely at her life through this work. I hope viewers will appreciate it and discover many previously unknown aspects of her story.”
The documentary will be aired on Channel i at 2:40pm on 5 September a day after the 72nd birthday of Sabina Yasmin.
