Coke Studio Bangla has unveiled its latest creation, “Baaji”, a mesmerising fusion of urban folk melodies and the deep-rooted rhythms of indigenous Bangladeshi heritage. As part of the third season of this much-anticipated musical journey, “Baaji” continues Coke Studio Bangla’s mission to celebrate the diverse cultural fabric of Bangladesh, uniting its rich traditions with contemporary sounds to create a global musical experience.
Featuring the exceptional Emon Chowdhury as both the lead vocalist and music director, alongside the soulful presence of singer Hashim Mahmud, “Baaji” is the fourth track of Season 3. It stands as a testament to the powerful potential of music to transcend cultural boundaries, offering listeners a sonic blend that is as heartwarming as it is innovative.
Written by urban poet and musician Hashim Mahmud, “Baaji” tells the tender story of innocent love, inspired by the simplicity and beauty of a girl from rural Bangladesh. The song’s lyrics explore the universal emotions of love, while drawing deeply from the country’s regional musical traditions. The composition seamlessly integrates folk melodies with the energetic pulse of tribal musical instruments, creating a rich, layered soundscape that speaks to both ancient heritage and contemporary artistry.
The song also features the artistry of Dhowa Gaan-er Dol, a traditional ensemble hailing from Tangail, celebrated for their distinctive performance style of singing while dancing in circular formations — a cultural practice that has been carefully preserved and passed down for more than a century. Adding to the rich sound of “Baaji” features flautist Kyo U Prue Marma and his grandmother, Mrakoiching Marma. A native of the picturesque Bandarban hills, she lends here voice in the Marma language, breathing life into ancestral songs that teeter on the brink of extinction, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of cultural preservation.
Emon Chowdhury expressed his enthusiasm for the release, stating, “It is great to have Coke Studio Bangla return, and we are excited to present ‘Baaji’ to our incredible audience. This is a truly special song, one where every artist poured their heart into the recording. There are so many elements to this song, spanning from the lyrics, the music, and the choreography, visual storytelling. It feels like a harmonious blend of everything that represents Bangladesh, encapsulated in a single song.”
“Baaji” not only highlights the vibrant sounds of Bangladesh but also exemplifies the core mission of Coke Studio Bangla: to honour the country’s rich heritage and showcase its artistic diversity to the world. The track, released on Saturday, is now available for streaming on Spotify and the official Coke Studio Bangla YouTube channel.
