Disney has officially dropped the trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash, the highly anticipated third installment in James Cameron’s blockbuster sci-fi saga, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The trailer release comes shortly after footage leaked online from its exclusive in-theater debut in front of Fantastic Four: First Steps last week.
Reactions have been swift and passionate. One fan praised it as “some of the most beautiful footage I’ve seen all year,” highlighting “fist fights inside cosmic volcanoes” and “huge aerial battles.” Meanwhile, an entertainment writer noted, “[The trailer] started as ‘meh, more of the same’ and ended with ‘yup, another billion to James Cameron.’”
A prominent film critic declared, “The visuals are on another level… ‘epic’ doesn’t feel like it does this trailer justice.”
The trailer returns viewers to the lush world of Pandora and introduces two new Na’vi clans: the Wind Traders and the fiery Ash People. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family face a growing threat from the Ash People, led by the fierce Varang (Oona Chaplin).
Highlights include explosive aerial battles, the return of the menacing Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) — now donning tribal warpaint — and intense confrontations, including a scene where a captive Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) is ominously told, “Your goddess has no dominion here.”
The film picks up after the death of Jake and Neytiri’s son, Neteyam, with their family now facing grief, displacement, and a deepening moral conflict. Cameron has teased that Fire & Ash will run even longer than the three-hour-plus Avatar: The Way of Water, explaining, “We had too many great ideas packed into act one of [Way of Water]… so we split it.”
Fire & Ash is slated for a December 19 release and is expected to dominate the holiday box office. The ensemble cast includes returning stars Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Giovanni Ribisi, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, and newcomers like David Thewlis and Brendan Cowell. The screenplay is penned by Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver.
Cameron plans to direct all five Avatar films, with Avatar 4 and 5 scheduled for 2029 and 2031, respectively. Beyond Avatar, he’s also eyeing a return to historical drama with an adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s Last Train From Hiroshima — his first non-Avatar feature since Titanic.
