Ike Barinholtz, fresh off his first Emmy nomination for The Studio, is in talks to portray Elon Musk in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film ‘Artificial’, produced by Amazon MGM, report variety.
Described as a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence, Artificial stars Andrew Garfield and Oscar-nominated actor Yura Borisov (Anora).
While the plot has yet to be officially confirmed, early reports suggest the story is inspired by the real-life chaos at OpenAI in 2023—when CEO Sam Altman was abruptly fired and reinstated days later.
Garfield is expected to play Altman, while Borisov is reportedly cast as Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder believed to have spearheaded the move to remove Altman.
The film’s script is written by Simon Rich (An American Pickle), who is also producing alongside David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, with Jennifer Fox joining the production team.
Barinholtz has built a career balancing sharp comedy and character work, with recent roles in The Mindy Project, Eastbound & Down, The Afterparty, and films like Blockers and Neighbors. His performance as Sal Saperstein in The Studio has earned him critical acclaim and his first Emmy nod.
Artificial continues Guadagnino’s collaboration with Amazon MGM, following his previous films Challengers (2024), Bones and All (2022), and Suspiria (2018). The studio is also set to release Guadagnino’s next project, After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
