Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which is already making waves at the global box office ahead of its official worldwide release on May 23.
In a remarkable prelude to its US and major market debut, the high-octane action thriller has amassed $12 million from just five countries within its first two days of release.
The film, directed by franchise veteran Christopher McQuarrie and presented by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, premiered early in India, Japan, South Korea, and the Australia-New Zealand region on May 17, reports Hindustan Times.
It is also set to release in China, a major box office market on May 30, a feat that is being hailed as another win for the Tom Cruise-led franchise, given the increasing difficulty for Hollywood films to secure Chinese release dates.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the film drew over 750,000 viewers in South Korea over its opening weekend, marking the biggest film debut in the country so far this year. The movie grossed $5 million in South Korea and $2 million in Japan within the first 48 hours, while earning approximately ₹33 crore (around $4 million) in India, according to Sacnilk. It also collected just under $1 million collectively from Australia and New Zealand.
With these figures, Mission: Impossible 8 is expected to surpass $20 million globally before its US release on Friday.
In North America alone, box office projections suggest an opening weekend of over $100 million, with international markets likely to deliver even more. Industry experts are optimistic that the film could kick off a successful summer season for Hollywood and reinvigorate the Mission: Impossible franchise.
The ensemble cast includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Angela Bassett, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, and Greg Tarzan Davis.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning released in Indian cinemas on May 17 in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and anticipation is high as it races toward a potential billion-dollar run.
