Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for the highly anticipated third and final season of its global phenomenon, 'Squid Game'. The Korean drama series, which became a worldwide sensation upon its debut, is set to conclude this summer, with Season 3 premiering on June 27.
Filmed back-to-back with Season 2 and conceived as a single narrative arc, the upcoming season picks up after a major cliffhanger.
The Season 2 finale saw Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456 (played by Emmy-winner Lee Jung-jae), attempt a failed rebellion within the deadly games. The fallout included the shocking death of his closest ally, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), at the hands of The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who had secretly infiltrated the games as a false contestant.
In an interview with Variety, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted at a dramatic shift in Gi-hun’s character.
“You’ll meet Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads,” Hwang said. “He will not be the man he was in Season 2. What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist?”
Season 2 of Squid Game debuted in December and shattered viewing records, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series in a single week. It now ranks as the platform’s third-most viewed series of all time, trailing only behind Squid Game Season 1 and Wednesday.
In addition to its core cast, several returning characters will appear in the final season, including Yim Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Park Gyu-young, and Wi Ha-joon — a reflection of the surviving members of the rebellion.
The countdown begins now: Squid Game Season 3 premieres globally on Netflix on June 27.
