Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui spoke about the current state of Bollywood in an interview with Puja Talwar for her YouTube channel. He criticised the industry for copying from others and stated that it is going through a creative lull.
‘Bollywood has been stealing from the beginning’
Nawaz spoke about the growing insecurity in Bollywood, saying, “In our industry, the same formula is repeated for five years straight — only when audiences grow tired of it do they finally let it go. Insecurity has increased significantly. If something works, they keep milking it, pushing it to the point of excess. What's even more disheartening is the trend of churning out sequels — two, three, even four parts. It's a kind of creative bankruptcy, no different from financial bankruptcy. There's a severe lack of originality. From the beginning, our industry has been a thief — we've stolen songs, we've stolen stories.”
Slams Bollywood for normalising copying
He added, "How can thieves be creative? We've stolen from South Indian cinema, from here and there — wherever possible. Even some cult classics that turned into hits have scenes lifted from elsewhere. It’s become so normalised that no one bats an eye anymore — it’s like, 'So what if it’s stolen?' Back in the day, they’d literally hand over a video and say, ‘This is the film we want to remake.’ They’d just watch it and replicate it. What can you really expect from an industry like that? The kind of actors it attracts will reflect the same mindset. And then actors and directors start quitting — like Anurag Kashyap, who was bringing in good work."
