Renowned Bengali filmmaker Srijit Mukerji has revealed that his upcoming film, KillBill Society, was inspired by a deeply personal and shocking incident from Hollywood star Angelina Jolie's life. The film, set to release next month, is a sequel to Mukerji’s 2012 hit Hemlock Society.
In a recent post on his X account, Srijit shared that the idea for KillBill Society originated from Jolie's suicide attempt. The celebrated actor had once disclosed that, at the age of 22, she planned her own murder by hiring a hitman. Struggling with intense suicidal thoughts, Jolie believed that having her life taken by someone else would ease the burden of guilt on her loved ones, who might otherwise feel they hadn’t done enough to help her.
In a 2003 interview with The Face, Jolie explained her reasoning, saying, “I was very aware that so many people around me, like my mother, would feel as though they didn’t give enough or do enough if I’d taken my own life. So my solution to that was if someone else had taken my life—like in a ‘robbery’—then it would be murder, and it wouldn’t be that anyone would feel they’d let me down.”
Referencing this haunting revelation, Srijit wrote on his X account, “For the conspiracy theorists, this real-life incident is the genesis of #KillbillSociety. So sit back, relax and enjoy the music! :)”
Angelina Jolie, who was last seen portraying opera legend Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama Maria, has been vocal about her struggles with mental health. Mukerji’s new film is expected to delve into the profound and complex themes of life, death, and human despair, much like its predecessor.
