David Schwimmer recently recalled a "genuinely frightening" moment during a live taping of “Friends” when Matt LeBlanc, his co-star was injured.
Schwimmer, now 58, described how LeBlanc dislocated his shoulder while performing a pratfall for a scene. "He turned pale, stood up, and I saw his shoulder was out. He looked like he was about to faint," Schwimmer told Entertainment Weekly.
Schwimmer immediately called "cut" and stopped the filming. "It was truly scary," he said. "You could tell how badly hurt he was. We had to halt filming for the night, and he was taken to the hospital."
LeBlanc's on-set injury was first shared during the “Friends” reunion on HBO Max. The incident occurred while filming the episode "The One Where No One’s Ready," where LeBlanc's character, Joey, battles Matthew Perry's Chandler Bing for a chair in the apartment as they wait for the girls to finish getting ready.
LeBlanc had successfully filmed three takes of jumping into a chair, but they decided to shoot a fourth take. "I went to jump over the coffee table and somehow tripped," he explained. "My legs flew into the air, and my shoulder popped out of the socket."
LeBlanc's injury was later written into the episode "The One With the Jam." Executive producer Kevin Bright shared, "We included that in the show, then waited for Matt to recover before filming the ending of 'The One Where No One’s Ready.' What was initially the simplest episode ended up taking the longest to shoot."
Schwimmer and LeBlanc starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, and the late Matthew Perry. During the first season, the cast members were between 25 and 31 years old. Over the years, the group has remained close, especially after Perry’s passing on October 28, 2023, due to the "acute effects of ketamine" and subsequent drowning, as confirmed by Fox News Digital.
The sitcom “Friends” which debuted on September 22, 1994, followed six friends living in New York City. It quickly became a hit and ran for 10 successful seasons.
In a June "Actors on Actors" conversation, Jennifer Aniston reflected on the premiere of Friends. "It’s hard to believe it’s 30 years old now," she said. "I remember the day it was going to air on NBC. Matthew Perry and I were having lunch, and we knew Lisa was getting her hair done. We went to the salon, and I snuck up behind her, taking over from the stylist and started washing her hair. It got out of control, which was unfortunate."
Aniston continued, "But the excitement we felt back then still feels fresh. The fact that Friends has had such a long and meaningful life, and still resonates with people, is one of the greatest gifts all six of us could have ever imagined."
