Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on journalists to uphold objective, impartial and responsible journalism.
"They must call a spade a spade," he said while addressing a greetings exchange meeting with the newly elected executive committee of Thakurgaon Press Club at the Anisul Haque Auditorium on Friday.
The minister said one of the key duties of the media is to guide politicians towards the right path by highlighting their mistakes.
"The stronger a country's media is, the stronger its democracy becomes," said Mirza Fakhrul while addressing the program as the chief guest.
The seasoned politician said politicians are not above criticism, and mistakes can occur while working to meet people's expectations. "It is the media's duty to highlight mistakes, ensure accountability and uphold the truth before the public."
He also expressed deep concern over incidents in which journalists face attacks and harassment for publishing truthful reports.
Referring to the government's election pledges, the minister said two new upazilas had been approved for Thakurgaon, and work on the initiative had already begun.
However, he stressed that building infrastructure alone would not be enough, saying honest, competent and people-oriented leadership must also be developed, while those involved in running the new upazilas should carry out their duties responsibly.
Addressing journalists, he said they should judge people by their work rather than as individuals.
The media should highlight good work while fearlessly reporting on irregularities, corruption and activities that go against the public interest.
After the short speech, Mirza Fakhrul congratulated the newly elected body and expressed hope that through objective and responsible journalism, they would further strengthen public trust and take the press club to new heights.
