Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, accused the Awami League of "selling the nation's freedom" and now "fleeing to India." Speaking at a rally on Great Victory Day in Bijoy Nagar, Dhaka, he criticized the ousted party.
Shafiqur said that the nation, which gave them a lesson and brought liberation, is ready to prevent any conspiracy of the Awami League against Bangladesh. He warned that any future attempts to undermine Bangladesh’s sovereignty would be met with resistance from the people.
He stressed that the youth, who fought for the nation’s freedom in 1971 and beyond, would never allow their independence to be compromised again. Rahman also pointed out that a single family had hijacked the credit for the country’s independence, unfairly labeling the people of Bangladesh as anti-independence.
While Bangladesh achieved independence in 1971, Shafiqur Rahman asserted that true freedom from exploitation would only be realized in 2024. To safeguard that freedom, he emphasized the need for vigilance from the nation’s 180 million citizens.
The Jamaat Ameer also urged the government to ensure all citizens are included in the voter list, calling for elections to be held with complete impartiality and transparency. "If Jamaat is entrusted with governance, the country will never be sold again as it has been in the past," Dr. Shafiqur declared.
