Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, during a recent visit to the Baroipara canal excavation project, warned against interference in the project, stating, “We did not come from any drawing room; we came from the streets and political grounds.” Mayor Shahadat emphasized that any attempt to obstruct the project in West Bakolia would be met with strong action, noting that public suffering caused by mafia activities will not be tolerated.
The Mayor made these comments on Sunday while inspecting the canal digging project, part of the city’s broader waterlogging resolution effort. He expressed confidence that once completed, the project would significantly alleviate the city's waterlogging issues. “I am determined to see this project through to completion, meeting all necessary standards,” he stated.
Additionally, Mayor Shahadat revealed plans to transform the Baroipara Canal area into a tourist spot, leveraging its natural beauty to create an attractive public space. “This project will provide a leisure area for our citizens and create job opportunities for local residents,” he added.
Earlier, the Mayor launched a citywide mosquito control campaign from Bakolia Kalamia Bazar. He then inspected cleaning and renovation work in the 17th and 18th wards, reviewing worker performance and receiving feedback from residents.
While inspecting, Mayor Shahadat announced a shift to nighttime waste collection, highlighting issues of absenteeism among cleaning staff. “Some workers are neglecting their duties to engage in trading instead,” he remarked, warning of potential job cuts for those who do not perform.
The Mayor noted that some canals had essentially become dumping grounds and urged residents to be mindful of waste disposal.
Chattogram City Corporation officials, including Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Towhidul Islam and other senior officials, were present during the Mayor’s visits.
