A man was killed and four others were injured after being struck by lightning in Mohalchhari upazila of Khagrachari on Tuesday afternoon, reports UNB.
The lightning struck at the time when a strong storm coupled with heavy rains and gusty winds was sweeping through the district, leaving residents without electricity.
The identities of the casualties could not be known immediately.
The lightning struck in the remote village of Khyangsa Para in Mohalchhari, leaving the man killed and four injured.
Locals said numerous trees were uprooted, billboards destroyed and transmission lines of electricity damaged.
The main road near Khagrachari Bus Terminal was blocked for nearly an hour due to fallen trees, halting traffic in the area.
In another incident, several trees fell on the garage shed of Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner’s Office, crushing several vehicles.
One Babul Tripura, 27, a local resident, was severely injured when a tree fell on him on the DC office premises.
District Fire Service Station Officer Rajesh Barua confirmed that teams were working to clear fallen trees and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
