Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Saturday highlighted the essential role of civil society in the quest for an equitable society and state, asserting that this objective transcends the agenda of any interim government.
Speaking virtually at a national consultation organized by the CSO Alliance, Rizwana emphasized the importance of collective action and self-reform within the government. "Any shortcomings in government initiatives should be pointed out," she stated, underscoring the need for accountability.
The advisor revealed that the government is actively engaging in discussions with various commissions to promote equity, while ensuring a free flow of information. She noted that representatives of protestors are being included in dialogues during times of unrest.
"Confidence in the government must be maintained," Rizwana remarked, indicating a shift in governance strategies from traditional methods. Her comments came during a forum aimed at fostering dialogue on the evolving role of civil society in Bangladesh and its contribution to inclusive governance.
The advisor further noted that civil society and NGOs have contributed significantly to the state. As a community, we need to strengthen our bonds. She mentioned that discussions have taken place regarding GNCC, and progress has been advised. The issue will be raised in the next cabinet meeting, addressing various priorities. NGOs also need self-reflection, and the NGO Bureau must maintain transparency. We must uphold our unique identity and collectively work with that vision. Civil society and NGOs need to prioritize their work.
