A report by Jatri Kalyan Samity reveals that The month of September saw 493 road accidents in Bangladesh, claiming 498 lives while leaving 978 injured, reports UNB.
Mohammad Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, Samity General Secretary, shared the findings at a press conference on Thursday.
The report states that 40 railway accidents resulted in the deaths of 37 people, with four others injured. Additionally, 14 accidents on waterways claimed 19 lives, left 56 people injured, and 47 others missing.
The report also reveals that motorcycle accidents caused 195 deaths and 149 injuries, representing 38.94% of total accidents.
The highest number of road accidents was experienced by Chattogram Division. With 116 accidents resulting in 109 deaths and 251 injuries, the situation there is dire.
The report indicates that among those who lost their lives in road accidents this month were 10 members of law enforcement, 109 drivers, 87 pedestrians, 49 transport workers, 51 students, 12 teachers, 68 women, and 56 children.
According to Jatri Kalyan Samity, the primary causes of road accidents are- lack of traffic police presence, inexperienced drivers, absence of road signs, insufficient training signs for new drivers, vehicle defects and violations of traffic laws, and unfit vehicles.
